Water Quality Overview

When most people think about water, they often think what they want to do with that water — is it safe to drink? To swim in? To irrigate with? When scientists think about water, they tend to focus on what components are present in the water: it is these components which make the water safe for its various uses. The components in water can include chemical contamination, such as gasoline; biological contamination, such as bacteria which can make people ill; and naturally-occurring chemicals which may be benign at lower concentrations and problematic or dangerous at higher concentrations, such as chloride, manganese, and arsenic. The concentrations of all these components of the water are taken together when we discuss water quality.
